Six Mantras and Mantra Jewellery Pieces to Help You Keep Zen This Christmas
The holiday season can be a stressful time, and we can all use a little extra help finding our zen. Mantras are a great way to help still a frantic mind, so what better than a new mantra and a piece of mantra jewellery to help us sail through the festive period, and beyond? That’s why I asked the lovely Jo Stroud, Founder of Mantra Jewellery, to share her favourite mantras and mantra jewellery with us, and to tell us a bit more about the meaning behind them.
How does mantra jewellery work?
Says Jo, “I believe that words have a powerful impact on your mood and mindset. And I believe that jewellery is the best way to carry words with you, because it is personal – you wear it close to your skin; it’s portable – you carry it with you by wearing it; and it’s precious, in what it is made of.”
Jo combines the power of mantra with the power of beautiful jewellery to create her beautiful collection. Each piece of mantra jewellery represents a mantra, or positive phrase, to say to yourself throughout the day, as you hold onto your jewellery. Use it to focus your thoughts, slow you down, and bring you back to the mood you were in on your yoga mat.
For a yoga practitioner, mindful jewellery makes a perfect present at Christmas, as it enables the wearer to bring to mind their intentions through the day, outside of their yoga practice.
Jo’s top six mantras and the meaning behind them
Mantra: ‘Be still, be present, be mindful’
Mantra meaning: Says Jo, “A powerful message which reminds us to slow things down, and pay attention to what is going on around you. Today, right now, this moment – this is the most important moment. Yesterday has passed, and tomorrow has not yet arrived - so focus your mind on being right here, in this moment.”
Mantra: ‘I breathe in calmness, I breathe out stress’
Mantra meaning: Says Jo, “The single most important part of yoga training is learning to breathe properly and deeply. Take a few minutes through your day to just breathe. A deep breath will give us a moment of peace and calm; it slows us down, and connect us back to our bodies. Take hold of your necklace, and inhale deeply, exhale slowly.”
Mantra: ‘May I awake each day renewed’
Mantra meaning: Says Jo, “Each day provides the opportunity for a new beginning, a new attitude, a new approach. When you go to bed at night, bring to mind the intention of awaking with the feeling of being refreshed and renewed, and aim to carry this positive energy with you through the day.”
Mantra: ‘Sky above me, earth below me, fire inside me’
Mantra meaning: Says Jo, “This is a lovely mantra for yoga lovers, as it brings the feeling from your practice to your everyday life. Remember how you feel, when you are standing, grounded in Tree Pose: feel the solidity of the earth below you, holding you upright; imagine the sky above your head, representing all the possibilities in life; and experience the fire inside you – the life-giving energy that flows through you. Carry this energy with you all day.”
Mantra: ‘Be the best version of you’
Mantra meaning: Says Jo, “The beautiful Lotus blooms again every morning, thrusting upwards through dark and deep mud to always be bright, fresh and pure. It is a great metaphor for our lives, encouraging is all to make a positive choice to be the best version of ourselves that we can be. Yoga encourages us to make good choices - wear this necklace to remind you of that message throughout your day.”
Mantra: ‘Peace comes from within’
Mantra meaning: Says Jo, “A calming mantra to bring to mind throughout our busy lives. Carry this belief with you all day long, knowing that deep inside ourselves, is all the peace and contentment that we need. A good reminder not to look to external things for happiness, but to know that we ourselves hold the key. Yoga helps us to embrace and remember this.”
